楔子

東華大學是有機會感動人的，我們如此相信。
從一片平坦的甘蔗園中誕生，我們都知道它的歷史。
經過近十年的經營，整個校園變成一個令人想停留的地方。或是早晨的朝陽陪著覓食的環頸雉，或是向晚流連在中央山脈的山嵐，許多情感因此停留在這縱谷的北方。為什麼想停留，每個人有不同的理由，或許大家只在這裡交換人生旅程的方向。那太容易。
 

當我們可以感覺到樹已漸漸長大時，學校變熱鬧了時，大自然所賦於的聲音漸漸被人的聲音取代時，這些人的聲音漸漸把這裡裝扮出一所大學的模樣，我們也發現這所大學也漸漸成長屬於它的文化、它的聲音。而且，屬於東華大學的聲音是多麼稚嫩與令人心疼。於是我們開始期待，開始想像一個成長的模樣。總是可以預期吧！
 

藝文中心誕生在2003年春天的東華藝術季－跨海域，嚴格來說在梅雨紛紛的五月。
企圖在眾多的聲音中尋找和絃與共鳴，或者，想重新挑起感動的心。每年我們都可以期待春天與秋天的藝術節在東華展開。
我們不努力去蓋一棟宏偉的建築物然後叫它藝文中心，整個東華校園就是我們要經營的藝文中心，有觸動人心的各項表演與感人的對話，能夠看見生命。
我們期望的藝文中心是有機會讓年輕藝術家由這裡出發的舞台，從這裡走向夢想。我們期待所有的表演與活動都能寫成故事，成為記憶，且會讓人心動。
其他的都不重要了，因為我們要的藝術是會感動人的。

Prologue

National Dong Hwa University has the potential to touch people's hearts, and we believe this wholeheartedly.
Born from a flat sugarcane field, we all know its history.
After nearly a decade of development, the entire campus has transformed into a place where people want to linger. Whether it’s the morning sunlight accompanying the foraging Ring-necked pheasant, or the evening mist lingering over the Central Mountain Range, many emotions are left behind in the northern part of this valley. Why do people want to stay? Each person has different reasons, perhaps it’s because here, we simply exchange the direction of our life journeys. That’s easy.
 

When we start to feel the trees gradually growing, when the campus becomes livelier, when the sounds of nature are slowly replaced by human voices, these voices gradually shape this place into the form of a university, we realize that this university is also growing its own culture, its own voice. And how tender and heartbreaking that voice is, belonging to National Dong Hwa University. Thus, we begin to look forward, to imagine the form of its growth. It’s always something we can expect.
 

The Arts and Culture Center was born in the spring of 2003 during the Dong Hwa Arts Festival – "Across the Sea," strictly speaking, in the rainy month of May.
It seeks to find harmony and resonance amid many voices, or perhaps, to rekindle the heart’s capacity for emotion. Every year, we can look forward to the spring and autumn arts festivals held here at Dong Hwa.
We do not strive to build a grand building and call it the Arts and Culture Center; the entire Dong Hwa campus is the arts and culture center we aim to nurture, with performances that touch the heart and inspiring dialogues that allow us to witness life.
The Arts and Culture Center we envision is one that provides a platform for young artists to start their journey from here, a stage that leads them towards their dreams. We hope that all performances and events will become stories, become memories, and touch the hearts of others.
Everything else becomes secondary, because the art we seek is the kind that moves people.
